Adversity and toxic stress are so pervasive, they affect us all.

Most of us – no matter who we are or where we come from – have experienced some level of adversity in our lives. However, there are wide ranges in the type, severity and frequency of adversity.

Adverse Childhood Experiences, more commonly known as ACEs, are stressful or traumatic events experienced during childhood. Research shows these events impact brain development, and are related to health problems throughout the lifespan. In the context of ACEs, adversity refers to circumstances in a child’s life including neglect, abuse and family dysfunction. It can also refer to hardships faced by individuals and communities due to natural disaster, violence, discrimination or poverty.

You can find your ACE score below.

The most important thing to remember is that the ACE score is meant as a guideline. As important as your ACE score is, even more important is your capacity for resiliency. ACE scores do not take into consideration positive experiences in early life that can help build resilience and protect a child from the effects of trauma.
